Matsya Dwadashi

Matsya Dwadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s first incarnation — Matsya Avatar (the Fish Form).

It marks the divine event when Vishnu saved the world during the great deluge (Maha Pralaya) and restored the sacred Vedas.

Worshipping Lord Vishnu in this form grants purification from sins, prosperity, good health, and spiritual awakening.

The Legend of Matsya Avatar

In ancient times, King Vaivasvata Manu was performing penance on the banks of the Kritamala river.

One day, a small fish appeared in his palms and begged for protection from larger fishes.

Manu placed it in a small pot, but the fish grew too large — it outgrew the pot, the pond, the river, and finally even the ocean.

Then the fish revealed itself as Lord Vishnu:

“In seven days, a great flood will destroy the world. Build a large boat, bring the seven sages, the Vedas, seeds of all life, and tie the boat to my horn using the serpent Vasuki.”

As foretold, the flood came. Lord Matsya guided Manu’s boat to the Himalayas and later imparted the knowledge of the Vedas and cosmic truths.

This sacred teaching became known as the Matsya Purana.
