Maha Navami

Maha Navami falls on Ashwayuja Shukla Navami, the ninth and final day of Sharannavaratri, the day before Vijayadashami. Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini and as Siddhidatri, and in Telugu homes this is also the day of Ayudha puja.

Significance of Maha Navami

According to the Devi Mahatmyam, the goddess fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights. Navami is remembered as the culmination of that battle, which ended in her victory celebrated the next day as Vijayadashami. Among the Navadurgas, the goddess of the ninth day is Siddhidatri, the giver of all siddhis, seated on a lotus and worshipped by devas, rishis and siddhas alike.

Ayudha Puja

On Maha Navami, Telugu families clean and worship the tools of their livelihood. Farmers worship ploughs and tractors, artisans their instruments, students their books and pens, and people decorate vehicles with pasupu, kumkuma and flowers and break a gummadikaya (ash gourd) or coconut before them to ward off drishti. The belief is simple: whatever supports our life deserves gratitude.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Bathe early, clean the altar and offer red flowers and kumkuma to the goddess.
  • Recite Durga Saptashati, Mahishasura Mardini stotram or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
  • Perform Ayudha puja for tools, vehicles and books with turmeric, kumkuma and flowers.
  • Some families perform kanya puja, honouring young girls as forms of the goddess with food and gifts.
  • Offer naivedyam such as pulihora, payasam, chalimidi and garelu.

Fasting and Completion

Those who have fasted through Navratri often keep a full fast or a single meal on Navami and do parana after the Navratri puja is complete, as per family custom. In many homes the kalasham installed on Padyami is honoured with a final puja.

In the Telugu States

Temples across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including Kanaka Durga on Indrakeeladri, see heavy crowds through the final days of Dasara, and Navami eve is filled with preparations for Vijayadashami.

May the Mother who conquered Mahishasura destroy every obstacle in your life.
