Lambodara Sankatahara Chathurthi

Lambodara Sankatahara Chathurthi

Lambodara Sankatahara Chathurthi is the Sankatahara Chathurthi of the Pushya month, observed on Pushya Bahula Chavithi, the fourth day after Pournami. On this day devotees fast through the day and worship Lord Ganesha in his Lambodara form, breaking the fast only after sighting the moon at night.

What Is Sankatahara Chathurthi?

Every month, the Chavithi of the Bahula (Krishna) Paksha is called Sankatahara Chathurthi, meaning "the Chavithi that removes troubles". In each month Lord Ganesha is worshipped under a different name, and in Pushya the form honoured is Lambodara, "the one with a large belly". The large belly is said to hold the whole universe and to show his ability to digest all experiences, good and bad. Devotees believe that keeping this vratham sincerely removes obstacles and brings peace to the family.

Puja Vidhanam

  • Morning: Bathe early, clean the puja room and take a sankalpam for the Sankatahara vratham.
  • Fasting: Keep a fast through the day; many take only fruits, milk or water.
  • Evening puja: Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, offer durva grass, red flowers, sandal paste and akshatalu, and chant the Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram or Ganesha Ashtottaram.
  • Katha: Read or listen to the Sankatahara Chathurthi vratha katha.
  • Naivedyam: Offer undrallu, modakams, kudumulu or sesame laddus.
  • Chandra darshan: After moonrise, offer arghya to the moon with water, milk and akshatalu, then take the prasadam and break the fast.

Vratha Rules

The moonrise time matters on this day, because the fast ends only after the moon is seen and worshipped. Eat satvik food when breaking the fast, and avoid anger and harsh words during the day. If the moon is hidden by clouds, many families complete the arghya facing the direction of the moon at the expected time.

Benefits of the Vratham

Sankatahara Chathurthi is especially loved by those facing difficulties in work, studies, health or family matters. Observing it regularly every month is a simple and powerful form of Ganesha bhakti. Lambodara Sankatahara, falling in the cold, harvest-filled Pushya month, is a lovely time to offer sesame and jaggery sweets to the Lord.

May Lord Lambodara remove all your troubles and bless you with peace and success.
