Jaya Ekadashi
Jaya Ekadashi - The Victory-Bestowing Day of Liberation
The Shukla Paksha Ekadashi tithi of Magha month is called Jaya Ekadashi or Bhaimi Ekadashi. "Jaya" means victory. This sacred Ekadashi is the most powerful Ekadashi that destroys all kinds of sins and bestows victory, wealth, and liberation (moksha) upon devotees. In South India, this Ekadashi is also called Bhishma Ekadashi because Bhishma Pitamaha, lying on the bed of arrows during the Mahabharata war, heard the glory of Jaya Ekadashi from Lord Krishna on this day.
According to Hindu beliefs, those who observe a fast on Jaya Ekadashi not only attain freedom from sins but also receive relief from troubles. Financial difficulties are removed, and the influence of evil spirits and ghosts is eliminated. Poverty is eradicated, and prosperity and health are attained.
The Significance of Jaya Ekadashi
In the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, Lord Krishna explained the glory of Jaya Ekadashi to Yudhishthira. According to Krishna: "O Great King! Listen carefully. The Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Magha month is famous as Jaya Ekadashi. This sacred tithi destroys all sins and enables devotees to attain liberation. Those who observe it will not fall into ghostly species. Therefore, one should consciously observe Ekadashi".
Lord Krishna further elaborated: "O King! Jaya Ekadashi grants freedom even from the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). Those who observe Jaya Ekadashi vrat have already accumulated the results of all charities and sacrifices. Just by hearing and reading the glories of Jaya Ekadashi, one obtains the result of Agnishtoma sacrifice; by observing the fast, one reaches Vaikuntha".
Thus, Lord Krishna concluded the significance and glories of Jaya Ekadashi in the Bhavishya Uttara Purana.
The Sacred Legend - Malavan and Pushpavati
Once upon a time, a Gandharva named Malavan and an Apsara named Pushpavati lived in Indra's court. One day, Malavan was singing in Indra's assembly. However, at that time, his mind began wandering toward his beloved Pushpavati. Due to this, his rhythm faltered, and mistakes occurred in his music.
Lord Indra became angry and cursed Malavan and Pushpavati to be born in ghostly species (Pishacha Yoni). "Because your minds were not present here, you both shall go to Earth and take birth as ghosts. Experience suffering there," he cursed.
Cursed, Malavan and Pushpavati came to Earth and transformed into ghost forms. They both suffered immensely. In ghostly existence, they experienced extreme hardships. Unable to find food or drink water for days, they remained in agony. In that suffering, they remained without eating anything.
Fortunately, unknowingly, they happened to fast on Magha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (Jaya Ekadashi). That night, unable to sleep and lamenting in pain, night vigil (Jagaran) also occurred. By accidentally observing Jaya Ekadashi vrat and vigil, Lord Hari (Vishnu) was pleased.
Lord Hari sent his divine messengers and liberated Malavan and Pushpavati from ghostly existence. They regained their former Gandharva and Apsara forms. Thereafter, they returned to heaven. Indra's curse was completely removed.
Lord Krishna narrated this story to Yudhishthira: "O Yudhishthira! By accidentally observing Jaya Ekadashi vrat and vigil, Malavan and Pushpavati received Lord Hari's grace. They were freed from ghostly existence and reached heaven. Therefore, Jaya Ekadashi is extremely significant. By fasting and keeping vigil on this day, all sins are destroyed, and one reaches Vaikuntha".
