Indira Ekadashi: A Vrata for the Peace of Ancestors

Indira Ekadashi falls on Bhadrapada Bahula (Krishna) Ekadashi in the Telugu calendar. Because it comes in the middle of Mahalaya Paksha (Pitru Paksha), it is observed especially for the peace and liberation of ancestors. Purnimant calendars list it as Ashwayuja Krishna Ekadashi.

The Story of King Indrasena

King Indrasena, a devotee of Vishnu, ruled Mahishmati. One day Sage Narada came to his court and said he had seen the king's father in Yamaloka. Because an Ekadashi vrata in his past life had been broken midway, the father remained there, and he had sent word that if his son observed Indira Ekadashi and offered its merit, he would be freed. Following Narada's instructions, Indrasena kept the rules from Dashami, fasted on Ekadashi, performed shraddha and kept jagarana. By that merit his father reached Vaikuntha, says the Purana.

How the Vrata Is Observed

  • Take a single meal on Dashami and make the sankalpa for the next day.
  • On Ekadashi, bathe and worship Lord Vishnu as Saligrama or in a picture.
  • At midday, remember your ancestors and offer tarpanam or shraddha as per family custom.
  • Some families offer the pinda to a cow or to crows for the ancestors.
  • Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam and the Indira Ekadashi katha, and keep jagarana.
  • On Dwadashi, feed brahmins or the needy and then break the fast.

Rules

Rice and grains are avoided and phalahar is taken. Shraddha customs differ widely between families, so follow the guidance of elders or your family priest. Choose the fasting level according to your health.

Significance

Indira is a name of Lakshmi Devi. Falling in the fortnight devoted to ancestors, this Ekadashi is seen as a chance to repay our debt to them. Telugu families believe that when duties to ancestors are done with shraddha (sincerity), the pitrus are pleased and bless the whole family line.

May the merit of Indira Ekadashi bring peace to our ancestors and their blessings to us.
