Holika Dahan / Kama Dahanam

Holika Dahan is the sacred bonfire lit on Phalguna Pournami, the night before Holi. In the Telugu states it is widely known as Kama Dahanam or Kamuni Panduga. The festival of colours, Holi, follows the next day on Phalguna Bahula Padyami.

The Story of Prahlada and Holika

The asura king Hiranyakashipu tried many ways to kill his son Prahlada, who would not give up his devotion to Lord Vishnu. His sister Holika, who had a boon that fire would not burn her, sat in a blazing fire with Prahlada on her lap. By Sri Hari's grace Prahlada came out unharmed, while Holika was burnt to ashes. Holika Dahan celebrates this victory of devotion over evil.

The Story of Kama Dahanam

In Telugu villages the night is tied to a story from the Shiva Purana. The devas needed a son born to Shiva and Parvati to defeat Tarakasura. To turn Shiva's mind from his tapas towards Parvati, Manmatha shot his flower arrow. Angered, Shiva opened his third eye and Manmatha was reduced to ashes. Moved by Rati Devi's prayers, Shiva let Manmatha live on without a body, as Ananga. That is why villages burn an effigy of Kamudu on this night.

How It Is Celebrated

  • For days before, children and youngsters go house to house collecting wood and dried cow-dung cakes.
  • The pile is built at the village centre and worshipped at an auspicious time while Pournami tithi prevails.
  • Pasupu, kumkuma, flowers and a coconut are offered, and a thread is wound around the pyre during pradakshina.
  • The fire is lit with a prayer that bad habits and negativity burn away.
  • Next morning, some apply the ash on the forehead as a tilakam.

Care and Meaning

Many families light the fire only after Bhadra kalam ends. Do not cut green trees or burn plastic and tyres, and keep the fire away from homes. Holika stands for ego and Kamudu for unchecked desire; burning them means welcoming spring with devotion and self-restraint.

May this sacred fire burn away all darkness and fill your life with colour and joy.
