Govardhan Puja: Worship of Giridhari Krishna

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on Kartika Shukla Padyami, the day after the Deepavali Amavasya. It commemorates Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhana hill to protect the people of Gokula, and devotees worship the hill, cows and Krishna. It is a major festival in North India, especially around Mathura and Vrindavan.

The Story of Govardhana

According to the Bhagavata Purana, the cowherds of Gokula held a yearly sacrifice to Indra for rain. Young Krishna persuaded Nanda and the villagers to worship the Govardhana hill instead, since it gave their cattle grass and water. Angered, Indra sent torrential rain for seven days. Krishna lifted the hill on his little finger like an umbrella and sheltered everyone beneath it. Humbled, Indra sought Krishna's forgiveness, and Krishna came to be called Giridhari, the one who holds the mountain.

How the Puja Is Done

  • After bathing, a small Govardhana hill is shaped from cow dung or clay at the doorstep or puja area.
  • It is decorated with flowers and blades of grass, and an image of Krishna is placed with a lamp.
  • Cows are bathed, adorned with turmeric, kumkum and garlands, and fed bananas and jaggery.
  • A large offering of many dishes, called Annakut, is prepared as naivedyam for Krishna.
  • Devotees circle the hill model and share the offering as prasadam.

In Telugu Homes

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the same day is observed as Bali Padyami, and the holy Kartika month begins. Gopuja and Annakut are performed in some villages, Krishna temples and ISKCON centres. Honouring cattle is a custom close to the hearts of Telugu farming families.

Significance

The festival teaches respect for nature, cattle and the land that sustain us. Krishna's lifting of the hill shows that pride falls and that the Lord protects those who take refuge in him.

May Govardhanadhari Krishna shelter every family from the storms of life.
