Chaitra Navratri Siddhidatri Puja
Siddhidatri Puja is the ninth and final day of Chaitra Navratri, observed on Chaitra Shukla Navami, when Goddess Siddhidatri, the ninth Navadurga form, is worshipped. The same day is Sri Rama Navami, so in Telugu homes this Navami is doubly sacred, combining worship of the Divine Mother with the celebration of Sita Rama Kalyanam.
Who Is Siddhidatri?
She is called Siddhidatri because she bestows siddhis, spiritual accomplishments. The Puranas describe her as the giver of the eight siddhis: Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva and Vashitva. Devotees say even Lord Shiva attained these siddhis by her grace, and that her Shakti became half of his body, giving rise to the Ardhanarishvara form.
Siddhidatri is shown seated on a lotus, and in some descriptions riding a lion, holding a chakra, gada, conch and lotus in her four hands. Gods, sages and siddhas are all said to serve her.
How to Perform the Puja
- Bathe early, light the lamp near the kalasham and begin the puja with the intention of completing your Navratri sankalpam.
- Offer red and yellow flowers, kumkum, bangles and turmeric to the Goddess.
- Chant "Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah" and recite the Durga Saptashati or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
- In some regions sesame or sesame sweets are offered; payasam and pulihora are also common.
- At midday, worship Sri Rama and offer panakam, vadapappu and chalimidi, then share them with everyone.
- Many families do the Parana on Dashami the next day to complete the Navratri fast.
Link with Sri Rama Navami
The Ramayana says Sri Rama was born on Chaitra Shukla Navami. That is why Sita Rama Kalyanam is celebrated in villages and towns across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on this day, and huge crowds gather for the grand Kalyanam at Bhadrachalam. Chaitra Navratri thus begins with worship of Shakti and ends with the remembrance of Rama Nama.
Significance
Devotees believe this day gives the full fruit of nine days of worship, brings success to undertakings and increases wisdom and self-confidence.
By the grace of Mother Siddhidatri and Sita Rama, may all our righteous wishes be fulfilled.
