Chaitra Navratri Mahagauri Puja

Mahagauri Puja is the eighth day of Chaitra Navratri, observed on Chaitra Shukla Ashtami, when Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth of the Navadurga forms, is worshipped. The day is also regarded as Durgashtami. Since Sri Rama Navami comes the very next day, this Ashtami is when the Vasanta Navratri celebrations in Telugu homes reach their peak.

The Story of Mahagauri

To win Lord Shiva as her husband, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for many years, enduring sun, rain and cold. Her body became dark from the austerities. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva accepted her and bathed her with the waters of the Ganga, and her body shone white like jasmine and the conch. From then on she has been worshipped as Mahagauri. Some traditions tell the story a little differently, but its essence is that sincere tapas never goes unrewarded.

Her Form

Mahagauri is dressed in white garments and white ornaments and rides a bull. In her four arms she holds a trident and a damaru, and shows the abhaya and varada gestures. She represents calm, purity and forgiveness.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Bathe early, clean the house and puja room, and draw muggulu at the entrance.
  • Offer white flowers such as jasmine and chamanti, and drape a white cloth if you wish.
  • Chant "Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah" and recite Lalitha Sahasranamam or the Durga Saptashati.
  • Break a coconut and offer coconut sweets, payasam or pulihora as naivedyam.
  • Some families perform Kanya Puja, honouring young girls as forms of the Goddess by washing their feet, applying bottu and offering food and gifts.
  • Close with an evening lamp and harathi.

Significance

Devotees believe worshipping Mahagauri cleanses the mind, lightens the burden of past mistakes and keeps peace and prosperity in the family. Married women pray to her for saubhagyam and young women for a good husband. Those fasting take fruit and milk and prepare for the Sri Rama Navami puja on the following Navami.

May Mother Mahagauri fill every home with purity, peace and good fortune.
