Chaitra Navratri Kalaratri Puja
Kalaratri Puja is the seventh day of Chaitra Navratri, observed on Chaitra Shukla Saptami, when Goddess Kalaratri, the seventh of the Navadurga forms, is worshipped. Though her form looks fierce, she always grants auspiciousness to devotees, which is why she is also called Shubhankari. Devotees pray to her to remove fear, negative forces and danger.
Her Form
Kalaratri has a dark complexion, loose flowing hair and three eyes, and she rides a donkey. Flames are said to issue from her breath. Her right hands show the abhaya and varada gestures, while her left hands hold an iron hook (or vajra) and a sword. She is seen as the power of time that destroys the darkness of ignorance.
Puranic Background
The Devi Mahatmyam describes the Goddess taking a fierce form in her battle against Shumbha, Nishumbha and Raktabija. Raktabija had a boon that every drop of his blood falling on the ground would create a new demon; the Kali form of the Goddess destroyed him by not letting his blood touch the earth. Many traditions worship this fierce energy as Kalaratri in the Navadurga sequence.
How to Perform the Puja
- After the morning bath, light the lamp near the kalasham and take sankalpam.
- Offer dark blue flowers or hibiscus (mandara) to the Goddess.
- Chant "Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah"; some families read chapters seven and eight of the Durga Saptashati.
- Jaggery or sweets made with jaggery are a common naivedyam; bellam paramannam is a good choice.
- End the day with an evening lamp and recitation of Durga Kavacham or Durga Ashtottaram.
Significance
Devotees believe worshipping Kalaratri removes fear and needless anxiety and gives courage. People also pray on this day for protection from planetary afflictions and the evil eye. Elders say there is no need to fear her fierce form, because the Mother takes it only to protect her children.
Chaitra Navratri falls at the start of Vasanta Ritu and leads up to Sri Rama Navami. Those who fast live on fruit and milk and take a simple sattvic meal after the night puja.
May Mother Kalaratri, the giver of auspiciousness, remove the darkness from our lives and fill them with light.
