Buddha Pournami
Buddha Pournami: A Day of Peace and Compassion
Buddha Pournami falls on Vaishakha Shukla Pournami, the full moon of the Vaishakha month. Buddhist tradition holds that Gautama Buddha's birth, his enlightenment and his Mahaparinirvana all took place on this full moon, which is why it is also called Vaishakha Pournami or Buddha Jayanti.
The Story of the Buddha
Prince Siddhartha was born at Lumbini to King Shuddhodana of Kapilavastu and Queen Mayadevi. Raised in luxury, he was moved by the sight of an old man, a sick man, a dead body and a wandering monk, and left the palace to seek the cause of suffering. Meditating under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, he attained enlightenment and taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, a middle way of non-violence and compassion. Many Hindu puranic traditions also remember the Buddha as one of the Dashavataras of Lord Vishnu.
The Telugu Connection
The Andhra region was once a great centre of Buddhism, as the Amaravati stupa and Nagarjunakonda still show, and Acharya Nagarjuna is traditionally associated with this land. In Telugu homes the same full moon is also remembered as the Jayanti of Annamacharya, the great Telugu composer, and in some traditions as Kurma Jayanti.
How to Observe the Day
- Wake early, bathe, clean the house and light a lamp.
- Offer flowers, a lamp and incense before an image of the Buddha and spend some time in quiet meditation.
- As it is a Pournami, many families also perform Satyanarayana Vratam or Vishnu puja.
- Eat simple satvik food and avoid non-vegetarian meals.
- Give food, buttermilk or drinking water to the needy; charity in Vaishakha is considered especially meritorious.
Significance
The day reminds us to let go of anger, hatred and greed and to live with kindness. Like the calm light of the full moon, the mind should become clear and peaceful.
May this Vaishakha Pournami fill every home with peace, compassion and wisdom.
