Bhadrapada Amavasya
Bhadrapada Amavasya is the new-moon day of Bhadrapada Bahula Paksha, widely known as Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It closes the fortnight of Pitru Paksha, and the very next day, Ashwayuja Shukla Padyami, Sharan Navaratri begins.
Pitru Paksha and Mahalaya
According to the dharma shastras, the ancestors (pitrus) visit the earthly realm during Bhadrapada Bahula Paksha to receive tarpanam and pindam from their descendants. Shraddham is normally performed on the tithi of each ancestor's passing. Those who do not know the tithi, or who missed it, may perform shraddham for all ancestors together on this Amavasya, hence the name Sarva Pitru Amavasya. A well-known story says that Karna, famed for his generosity, learned the importance of feeding the ancestors and was allowed to return to earth to make offerings to them during this fortnight.
How It Is Observed
- Bathe early, in a river or tank if possible, and wear clean clothes.
- Offer tarpanam to the pitrus with sesame seeds, darbha grass and water; if possible, have a purohit perform shraddham or hiranya shraddham.
- Cook dishes the elders liked, such as payasam, garelu, pappu and rice, and offer them.
- Feed crows, cows and dogs, as is the custom.
- Give food and clothes to Brahmins or people in need.
- Light a lamp in the evening and bow to the ancestors.
In the Telugu States
In Telangana, Bathukamma begins on Mahalaya Amavasya with Engili Poola Bathukamma, so ancestral rites and the flower festival meet on the same day. Devotees gather on the banks of the Godavari and Krishna, at places like Rajamahendravaram, to offer tarpanam.
Significance and Rules
Elders believe that satisfied ancestors bless the family line with growth and peace at home. Non-vegetarian food, alcohol and quarrels are avoided. New purchases and auspicious beginnings are generally not made on this day. Customs vary between families, so following your own household tradition is best.
May the blessings of our forefathers always protect our families.
