Bali Padyami
Bali Padyami: Welcoming King Bali the Day After Deepavali
Bali Padyami (Bali Pratipada) is celebrated on Kartika Shukla Padyami, the day after the Deepavali Amavasya. It is believed that the generous King Bali, who gifted three steps of land to Vamana, visits the earth on this day to see his people. For Telugu families, this day also marks the beginning of the holy Kartika masam.
The Story of Bali and Vamana
Bali Chakravarti, grandson of Prahlada, was a generous and righteous ruler who conquered the three worlds. To restore heaven to the Devas, Lord Vishnu came to Bali's yagna as Vamana, a young brahmachari, and asked for three steps of land. Though his guru Shukracharya warned him, Bali kept his word. Vamana grew into Trivikrama, measured the earth with one step and the sky with the second, and asked where to place the third. Bali offered his own head. Pleased with his generosity, the Lord made him king of Sutala loka, promised to stand guard at his door, and allowed him to visit the earth once a year.
How It Is Celebrated
- Bali puja: Some families draw King Bali's figure with rice flour or colours and worship it with flowers and a lamp.
- Go puja: Cows and bullocks are bathed, decorated with turmeric and kumkum and fed jaggery and bananas.
- Kartika snanam: As Kartika masam begins, devotees start early-morning river baths or cold-water baths.
- Akasha deepam: In many Telugu homes and temples, the month-long lighting of the akasha deepam begins today.
- Festive food: The Deepavali mood continues with new clothes, payasam, bobbatlu and family gatherings.
In Other Regions
Bali Pratipada is celebrated as "Padwa" in Maharashtra and as the New Year in Gujarat, while North India observes Govardhan Puja and Annakut on the same day. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the day is seen mainly as the start of Kartika masam and a continuation of Deepavali.
Inner Meaning
Bali, who surrendered everything including himself, symbolises the giving up of ego. The message of the day is to give without the pride of "I am the giver".
May Bali's generosity and Vamana's grace fill every home with abundance.
