Atla Taddi

Atla Taddi is a much-loved nomu (vratham) of Telugu women, observed on Ashwayuja Bahula Tadiya, the third day after the Pournami that follows Dasara. Goddess Gauri is worshipped, attlu (dosas) are offered to her after moonrise, and vayanam is given to muttaiduvas. It is also known as Chandrodaya Uma Vratham.

Background

Elders say Goddess Parvati observed this nomu to win Lord Shiva as her husband. So unmarried girls observe Atla Taddi praying for a good husband, and married women for saubhagyam and family happiness. In many families, once the nomu is begun it is kept for some years and then concluded with an udyapana.

The Pre-Dawn Fun

The day before, girls apply gorintaku (henna) on their hands. On Taddi morning they wake before sunrise, bathe and eat chaddannam, curd and gongura pachadi, after which they fast for the day. Groups of girls gather to swing on uyyalas and play, singing the familiar "Atla taddoy aaratloy, muddapappoy moodatloy".

How to Perform the Puja

  • In the evening, clean the altar and place a Gauri Devi made of turmeric on a peetham.
  • Worship her with pasupu, kumkuma, flowers and akshatalu while reciting the Gauri Ashtottaram.
  • After moonrise, see the moon and offer attlu made of rice and urad dal batter as naivedyam.
  • Read the Atla Taddi nomu katha and place the akshatalu on your head.
  • Many families give ten attlu with tamboolam, pasupu and kumkuma to muttaiduvas as vayanam; the number varies by custom.

Rules of the Nomu

The key rule is to eat before sunrise and then fast until moonrise. After the puja and vayanam, the attlu are taken as prasadam to break the fast. Those with health concerns may take milk or fruit and still do the puja with devotion.

Udyapana

In the year the nomu is completed, families perform udyapana. More muttaiduvas are invited and given vayanam of attlu, a saree or blouse piece and tamboolam, and their blessings are sought. The exact method differs from region to region and family to family.

May Gauri Devi bless every Telugu daughter with saubhagyam and joy.
