Ashadha Gupta Navratri Siddhidatri Puja

Siddhidatri Puja is held on Ashadha Shukla Navami, the ninth and final day of Ashadha Gupta Navratri. Devotees worship Goddess Siddhidatri, the ninth Navadurga, who — as her name says — grants siddhis and success in every endeavour. The nine-day worship reaches completion on this day.

Glory of Goddess Siddhidatri

Siddhidatri is seated on a lotus, with the lion as her vehicle, holding a discus, mace, conch and lotus in her four hands. She bestows the eight siddhis — Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva and Vashitva. A popular account says Lord Shiva himself received the siddhis by her grace and gave her half his body, becoming Ardhanarishwara. Her dhyana shloka says devas, siddhas, gandharvas and yakshas all serve her.

Why Ashadha Navami Matters

Because this is a "Gupta" (hidden) Navratri, worship happens mostly in the home puja room through japa and meditation. Widely kept in North India, it is observed in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by devoted upasakas of Ammavaru. Many conclude their deeksha on Navami with a homam or special parayanam. Parana follows on Dashami, and the next day — Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi — is celebrated in Telugu homes as Toli Ekadashi.

Puja Vidhanam

  • Bathe early and worship the kalasham and the Goddess with turmeric and kumkuma.
  • Decorate with lotuses, red roses and hibiscus.
  • Perform kumkuma archana chanting "Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namaha".
  • In some traditions sesame seeds or a sesame sweet is offered; pulihora and payasam may also be offered.
  • Those who can, read the Durga Saptashati or perform a small homam with purnahuti.
  • Give thambulam to young girls and married women and seek their blessings.

Benefits

Devotees believe Siddhidatri's worship helps complete unfinished tasks, removes obstacles in studies, career and business, and brings progress in spiritual practice. Elders say the merit of nine days of japa, fasting and discipline is fulfilled on this day. Keep any fast in line with your health.

May Mother Siddhidatri's grace bring all our good resolves to fruition.
