Ashadha Gupta Navratri Mahagauri Puja

Mahagauri Puja falls on Ashadha Shukla Ashtami, the eighth day of Ashadha Gupta Navratri. Devotees worship Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth Navadurga — a calm, radiant white form believed to wash away past sins and bring purity of mind.

The Story of Mahagauri

Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for years to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Exposed to sun, rain and dust, her body turned dark. Pleased with her tapas, Shiva bathed her with the waters of the Ganga, and she shone white like snow, jasmine and the conch — so she came to be called Mahagauri, "the greatly fair one". She is shown in white garments, seated on a white bull, holding a trident and a damaru, with abhaya and varada mudras.

Ashtami in Gupta Navratri

Ashadha Gupta Navratri runs from Ashadha Shukla Padyami to Navami. It is observed more widely in North India; in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is kept quietly at home by Srividya upasakas and devout families. Ashtami is regarded as the most powerful day of any Navratri, so many families perform Kanya Puja — honouring young girls as forms of the Goddess, feeding them and giving small gifts.

Puja Vidhanam

  • Take a head bath early and wear white or light-coloured clothes.
  • Decorate the Goddess with white flowers such as jasmine (malle) and white chrysanthemums.
  • Offer turmeric, kumkuma and akshatas while reciting her Ashtottaram or the Lalitha Sahasranamam.
  • In some traditions a coconut or a coconut sweet is offered as naivedyam on this day.
  • If possible, honour two to nine young girls — wash their feet, apply bottu, serve a meal and give thambulam.
  • Offer harathi and pray for the well-being of the family.

Benefits and Niyamas

Devotees believe worship of Mahagauri lightens the burden of past mistakes, purifies the mind, removes obstacles to marriage and blesses married life with harmony. Those fasting may take fruits and milk, or eat a single satvik meal as health allows. Simple food, gentle speech and helping others are the key observances of the day.

May radiant Mother Mahagauri cleanse our hearts and bless us with peace and prosperity.
