Ashadha Gupta Navratri Kalaratri Puja
Kalaratri Puja is the seventh day of Ashadha Gupta Navratri, observed on Ashadha Shukla Saptami. On this day devotees worship Goddess Kalaratri, the seventh of the Navadurga forms — fierce in appearance but always auspicious to her devotees, which is why she is also called Shubhankari.
What is Ashadha Gupta Navratri?
Ashadha Gupta Navratri runs from Ashadha Shukla Padyami to Navami. "Gupta" means hidden: these nine nights are known for quiet, disciplined worship at home rather than public celebration. They are observed more widely in North India; in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana they are kept mainly by Shakta upasakas and some families. Some worship the Navadurgas during these days, while others worship the Dasha Mahavidyas.
Form of Goddess Kalaratri
Kalaratri is dark in complexion, with loose flowing hair, three eyes and a necklace that shines like lightning. She rides a donkey and has four hands: one holds a sword, another an iron hook, while the other two show the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (boon-giving) mudras. Devi traditions describe her as the fierce power that destroyed demons such as Raktabija. Her name means "the night that ends even Time", and devotees believe remembering her removes fear of evil forces and planetary troubles.
Puja Vidhanam
- Bathe early, clean the puja room and offer salutations to the kalasham installed on Ghatasthapana day.
- Decorate the Goddess's image with red flowers, especially hibiscus (mandaram).
- Light a sesame-oil or ghee lamp and perform kumkuma archana.
- Chant "Om Devi Kalaratryai Namaha" 108 times; many also read the Durga Saptashati or Devi Khadgamala.
- In some traditions jaggery or a jaggery payasam is offered as naivedyam on this day.
- Close with camphor harathi and pray for the protection of the family.
Fasting and Niyamas
During Gupta Navratri many people eat once a day or keep a fruit-and-milk fast, avoiding onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food. Choose a fasting method that suits your health — devotion and a steady mind matter most. Keeping the worship private and simple is the spirit of Gupta Navratri.
Significance
In yogic tradition the Saptami worship is linked to the Sahasrara chakra. Kalaratri is revered as the mother who drives away the darkness of fear and ignorance and gives courage. Since Ashadha is also the month of Bonalu in Telangana and the Shakambari Utsavams at Indrakeeladri, Vijayawada, Telugu devotees see the whole month as a special time for Ammavari worship.
May Goddess Kalaratri protect us all from fear and fill our lives with light.
