Ashada Gupta Navratri Ghatasthapana

Ashada Gupta Navratri Ghatasthapana is the installation of the sacred kalasha on Ashadha Shukla Padyami, which formally begins the nine nights of Devi worship. Unlike the grand Sharan Navaratri, the Ashadha Navratri is a quiet, inward sadhana, which is why it is called "Gupta" (hidden) Navratri.

What Is Ghatasthapana?

Ghata means pot or kalasha. The Goddess is invoked into a water-filled kalasha, and for the next nine days that kalasha itself is worshipped as the Devi. It symbolises creation, abundance and the presence of Shakti in the home. In the Shakta tradition the Ashadha Gupta Navratri is linked with the Dasha Mahavidyas, while many devotees simply worship Durga. In several temples and households in the Telugu states these same days are observed as Varahi Navaratrulu.

Ghatasthapana Puja Steps

  • Wake early, take a head bath, clean the puja space and draw a muggu (rangoli).
  • Spread soil in a clay tray and sow navadhanyalu (nine grains); some families grow these sprouts through the nine days.
  • Fill a copper or brass kalasha with clean water and add turmeric, kumkum, akshatalu, a coin and mango or betel leaves.
  • Place a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top, and begin with Vighneshwara puja.
  • Take sankalpam, invoke the Goddess into the kalasha and offer shodashopachara puja.
  • Families that keep an akhanda deepam should ensure it burns through all nine days.
  • Offer pulihora, payasam or chakkera pongali as naivedyam and finish with mangala harathi.

Timing and Observances

Ghatasthapana is usually done in the morning while Padyami tithi prevails, ideally in Abhijit muhurtham. Elders advise against installing the kalasha while Amavasya lingers or during Rahu Kalam. Gupta Navratri sadhana is meant to be private: japa and parayanam are done quietly, without display. Some devotees follow a sattvic diet, celibacy and sleep on the floor during these nine days.

Significance

Shakta upasakas regard Ashadha as a powerful season for sadhana, and believe japa done in these nights bears fruit quickly. A properly performed Ghatasthapana is felt to set the tone for the entire Navratri. Starting Lalitha Sahasranamam, Durga Saptashati or Devi Khadgamala parayanam on this day is considered auspicious.

May the Divine Mother residing in the kalasha bless your home with peace, health and prosperity.
