Ashadha Gupta Navratri Brahmacharini Puja
Day Two of Ashadha Gupta Navratri: Brahmacharini Puja
On Ashadha Shukla Vidiya, the second day of Ashadha Gupta Navratri, devotees worship Brahmacharini, the second Navadurga. She embodies tapas, discipline and patience, which makes her worship especially fitting in a Gupta Navratri known for inward sadhana.
The Story of Her Penance
Born as the daughter of Himavan, Parvati took Sage Narada's advice and began severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. At first she lived on fruits and roots, then only on dry leaves, and finally gave up even leaves, earning the name "Aparna". The Puranas say the three worlds trembled at the intensity of her tapas until Shiva accepted her. Brahmacharini wears white, walks barefoot and holds a japamala in her right hand and a kamandalu in her left.

Puja on Vidiya
- Bathe before sunrise and offer water and flowers to the Kalasha set up the previous day.
- Offer white, fragrant flowers to the goddess and chant "Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namaha" on a japamala.
- Many families offer sugar, patika bellam (rock sugar) or a sugar-based payasam as naivedyam.
- A small personal discipline such as one meal a day, a period of silence or meditation suits Brahmacharini worship.
- You can read the Lalita Sahasranamam or Devi Khadgamala.
Observances
Those fasting during Gupta Navratri usually take fruits, milk and sattvic food. Anyone whose health does not allow fasting can eat one simple sattvic meal and keep the mind on worship. Many families avoid onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food. While Ashadha brings the festive Bonalu in Telangana and village goddess jataras in Andhra, this quiet worship at home brings a different kind of peace.
Blessings of the Day
Devotees believe worshipping Brahmacharini increases inner strength, concentration and self-control, so the day is valued by students and spiritual seekers. Her story teaches that patient, steady effort toward a goal always bears fruit.
May Mother Brahmacharini grant us all patience and firm resolve.
