Arudra Darshan: The Day of Nataraja's Cosmic Dance

Arudra Darshan is observed in the Margashira month on the day of the Arudra (Ardra) nakshatra, usually close to the Pournami. Devotees worship Lord Shiva in his form as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. The festival is mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu, most grandly at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple, where it is called Thiruvathirai.

Background

The presiding deity of the Arudra nakshatra is Rudra, so this star is considered dear to Shiva. Tamil tradition holds that on this day Shiva revealed his Ananda Tandava to the sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada. The dance of Nataraja represents his five cosmic acts: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment and grace.

For Telugu Devotees

Arudra Darshan is not a major festival in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but many Shiva temples perform special abhishekam and Rudrabhishekam on this day. Shiva devotees fast and have darshan in the evening. Since it falls during Dhanurmasam, an early morning temple visit is considered especially meritorious.

How to Observe

  • Wake up before sunrise, bathe and remember Lord Shiva.
  • At home, perform abhishekam to a Shiva Lingam or Nataraja picture with milk, curd, honey and tender coconut water.
  • Worship with bilva leaves, vibhuti and white flowers, and chant the Panchakshari "Om Namah Shivaya".
  • In Tamil homes a sweet called kali is offered; Telugu families may offer payasam or pongali.
  • If possible, witness the abhishekam at a nearby Shiva temple.

Significance

Devotees believe that the darshan of Nataraja removes ignorance and grants inner joy. The figure of Apasmara under Nataraja's foot stands for ignorance, and the dance shows its conquest. Dancers and artists hold this day in special regard.

Reciting the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram, Lingashtakam or Shiva Tandava Stotram on this day is considered auspicious.

May the blessings of Ananda Nataraja fill your life with joy and peace.
