Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya: The Day of Never-Ending Merit

Akshaya Tritiya falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tadiya. "Akshaya" means that which never diminishes, and any good deed, charity, japam or new beginning made on this day is believed to give lasting results. It is considered so auspicious that many people treat the whole day as a muhurtham, without needing a separate auspicious time.

Stories Linked to the Day

  • Parashurama Jayanti: Lord Vishnu's sixth avatar, Parashurama, was born on this tithi.
  • Kuchela and Krishna: Tradition says Kuchela (Sudama) visited his childhood friend Krishna with a handful of atukulu (flattened rice), and the Lord blessed him with great wealth.
  • Akshaya Patra: Lord Krishna is said to have given Draupadi the akshaya patra, a vessel whose food never ran out.
  • Treta Yuga: Many traditions hold that the Treta Yuga began on this day.

Some of these associations vary between Puranas and regions, but all point to the same idea of unending blessings.

Simhachalam Chandanotsavam

In Andhra Pradesh, Akshaya Tritiya is the day of the famous Chandanotsavam at Simhachalam near Visakhapatnam. Lord Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy remains covered in sandal paste throughout the year, and only on this day is the paste removed for nijaroopa darshanam, the true form of the Lord. Lakhs of devotees visit, and fresh sandal paste is applied again that night.

How to Observe

  • Take an early bath and worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with tulasi and flowers.
  • Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam, Lakshmi Ashtottaram or Kanakadhara Stotram.
  • Offer panakam, vadapappu, majjiga and payasam as naivedyam.
  • Give charity suited to the summer heat: water pots, buttermilk, umbrellas, footwear, fans and food.
  • Begin new ventures, house-warmings or studies, which are believed to grow steadily.

A Note on Buying Gold

Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya has become very popular, but the scriptures place the emphasis on daanam (giving), not buying. A small purchase is fine if you wish, yet sharing with those in need is the true spirit of the day.

May the blessings of Lakshmi Narayana in your life never diminish.
