Each Ayyappa devotee progresses through six spiritual stages — from the first-year Kanne Swami to the sixth-year Guru Swami. Every stage reflects deeper devotion, discipline, and inner growth. A Guru Swami is considered a guide, mentor, and spiritual elder who leads others in the sacred Sabarimala journey.
Devotees may also perform special poojas at home during their Deeksha period. With faith and proper ritual, the home becomes a sanctified temple.
🕉️ Classification of Swamis
- 1st Year: Kanne Swami
- 2nd Year: Katti Swami
- 3rd Year: Ganta Swami
- 4th Year: Gada Swami
- 5th Year: Peru Swami
- 6th Year onward: Guru Swami
🪔 Home Pooja Procedure
If a devotee wishes to perform Ayyappa Pooja at home, a simple altar or banana-leaf canopy may be arranged. If not possible, the pooja can be conducted before sacred images.
Pooja sequence:
- Chant Ayyappa Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names)
- Perform Ayyappa Pooja and sing bhajans
- Recite Lingashtakam
- Sing Uyyala Paatalu (cradle songs for the Lord)
- Offer camphor aarti with 18 lamps
- Bow in full prostration before the deity
- Offer salutations (paada namaskaram) to visiting Swamis
- Conclude with Chaddi (prasadam meal)
After observing the full 41 days of Deeksha, the devotee prepares for the sacred pilgrimage to Sabarimala. The path is one of devotion, discipline, and surrender.
The journey from Kanne Swami to Guru Swami is more than a ritual — it is a transformation of the soul. Each stage deepens devotion and strengthens discipline. Performing home poojas with faith fills the heart with peace and divine energy.
Through humility, service, and purity, every devotee becomes a living reflection of Lord Ayyappa’s light.
