Ayyappa Mala Dharana Vidhanam

The beginning of Ayyappa Deeksha is marked by Maala Dhaarana — the sacred act of wearing the holy garland. It is a vow of purity and surrender, symbolizing the devotee’s readiness to walk the path of discipline, devotion, and self-control.

Wearing the mala is not just a ritual; it is a sacred promise before God that the devotee will observe the Deeksha rules with complete purity of thought, word, and action.

🪔 The Significance and Procedure

From ancient times, Maala Dhaarana has been the formal start of Ayyappa Deeksha. The devotee wears the mala as a mark of commitment — a visible reminder of the vow taken before the Lord.

The mala is usually made of Tulasi, Rudraksha, or Coral (Pagadam) beads, with a small Ayyappa medallion (billalu) attached. It should always be worn through a Guru Swami, who blesses the devotee and guides him through the Deeksha journey.

If no Guru Swami is available, one may wear it through the blessings of their mother or a temple priest known for daily worship and purity. But before wearing it, the devotee must solemnly promise to follow every rule of Deeksha without fail.

The mala should be worn 41 days before the Sabarimala pilgrimage and kept around the neck until the completion of the journey. Every day during pooja, the devotee should offer camphor aarti to the mala and gently touch it to the eyes as a sign of reverence.

After returning from the pilgrimage, the mala should be respectfully removed and returned through the Guru Swami at the same place it was worn.

Throughout the period, the devotee must chant “Om Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa”, the supreme mantra that purifies the mind and guides the heart.

Maala Dhaarana is not just the beginning of Deeksha — it is the awakening of devotion. The mala around the neck becomes a reminder of purity, discipline, and surrender.

A devotee who wears it with sincerity burns away worldly attachments and lights the flame of divine consciousness within.

The journey that begins with the mala ends with the vision of Ayyappa — a journey from self to surrender.

Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa 🙏
