Meaning

This sacred hymn, found in the Rudra Yamala Tantra, is a mystical protective armor (Kavacha) invoking the fierce forms of Goddess Tara and Goddess Pratyangira.

It describes eight divine energies —
Stambhinī (paralyzer), Mohinī (enchantress), Kṣobhinī (agitator), Jṛmbhinī (expander), Bhrāminī (spinner), Raudrī (fierce one), Saṁhāriṇī (destroyer), and Tāriṇī (savior) —
who act to subdue enemies, remove obstacles, and protect the devotee.

Each mantra empowers the reciter with immense spiritual defense, victory over negative forces, and mental stability.

Phalaśruti (Result):
    •    Whoever recites or wears this Kavacham daily at the three junctions of the day (Trisandhyā) will conquer sorrow and fear.
    •    It protects in wars, royal courts, dangers, and calamities.
    •    Meditating upon Neela Saraswati (Ugra Tara) brings immediate success and mastery.

Essence:
This Kavacham acts as an energetic shield of divine fire, granting invincibility, courage, and spiritual power.
It is especially recommended for those facing obstacles, enemies, or psychic attacks.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Sri Tara Pratyangira Kavacham come from?
Its closing line names it the Ugra Tara Pratyangira Kavacham of the Rudrayamala, a tantric text. The text itself does not name a human author.
Who are the eight shaktis of the Tara Pratyangira Kavacham?
Stambhini, Mohini, Kshobhini, Jrimbhini, Bhramini, Raudri, Samharini and Tarini. The first seven are directed against adversaries, to stop, confuse, agitate and finally destroy them, while Tarini is asked to protect the reciter from every danger.
Why does Nila Saraswati appear in the Tara Pratyangira Kavacham?
Verse 13 tells the reciter to dwell on the mantra syllables and meditate on Nila Saraswati. The mantra that follows salutes the goddess as both Ugra Tara and Nila Saraswati, two names for the same form of Tara.
When does the Tara Pratyangira Kavacham say it should be recited?
Verse 11 speaks of reciting it at the three sandhyas, dawn, noon and dusk. At fifteen short verses, one recitation takes two or three minutes.
What situations does the phala shruti of the Tara Pratyangira Kavacham name?
Verse 12 lists battle, the royal court, a fortress or hard place, great fear and calamity as times when this Pratyangira vidya protects. Because it is tantric in origin, many begin it only after instruction from a guru.
