Meaning

This namavali honours Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu. All 108 names begin with the letter ba, so the list runs as one alliterative chain from Om Buddhaya namah to Om Brahmashaya namah. The text does not name its author or its source.

Names 1 to 39: the play on buddhi

The first group turns on three related words: buddha, budha (the wise) and buddhi (the intellect). He is Budhajanaanandin, who delights the wise, Buddhichodana, who stirs the intellect, and Buddhisakshin, the witness of the mind. Within the same run, Buddhidura reminds the reader that he lies beyond the reach of thought.

Names 40 to 69: many forms and renunciation

A string of bahu names follows: Bahurupa, Bahuguna, Bahunaman, the one of many forms, qualities and names. They lead to the renunciant teacher, Bahuvairagyabharita, full of detachment, Bandhamochaka, who releases beings from bondage, and Badhitasmara, who defeated Kama. Name 53, Brahmadushanakaitava, refers to the Puranic account that his criticism of the Vedas was only a stratagem.

Names 70 to 108: form and teaching

Balabhadrasakha calls him the friend of Balarama. Balahakabha, shining like a rain cloud, and Bisapushpabhalochana, lotus-eyed, describe his form, while Bahukripa and Brihatkshama speak of his compassion and patience. Bahudharmapravachana returns to his teaching, and the list closes with Brahmanya and Brahmasu.

The namavali is chanted in Dashavatara worship. Some sites present it as a hymn to the planet Budha, but the names describe the avatar.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sri Buddha Ashtottara Shatanamavali for the planet Budha or for the Buddha avatar?
The names point clearly to Buddha, the avatar of Vishnu, and not to Budha (Mercury) of the Navagrahas. Names such as Bandhamochaka (who frees from bondage), Badhitasmara (who overcame Kama) and Bahudharmapravachana (teacher of many dharmas) describe a renunciant teacher, and the title itself reads Buddha, not Budha.
Why does every name in the Buddha Ashtottara begin with the letter ba?
The list is built as an alliterative garland: all the names open with bu, bo, bra, bri or ba, from Buddhaya at the start to Brahmashaya at the end. This single-letter pattern makes the sequence easier to memorise.
What does the name Brahmadushanakaitava mean in the Buddha Ashtottara?
Name 53, Brahmadushanakaitava, means one whose criticism of the Vedas was only a stratagem. It matches the Puranic account in which Vishnu takes the Buddha form to lead the enemies of the gods away from Vedic ritual, and name 48, Budhetaravaracharya, the great teacher of the unwise, points the same way.
Why do Balabhadra and Subhadra appear in the Buddha Ashtottara?
Names 70 and 71 are Balabhadrasakha and Baddhasubhadra. Balabhadra and Subhadra are worshipped beside Jagannatha at Puri, and in several Odia depictions of the ten avatars Jagannatha takes the place of the Buddha, so these names seem to draw on that link.
When is the Sri Buddha Ashtottara Shatanamavali chanted, and how long does it take?
The text gives no special day and no phala shruti; it is used when the Buddha avatar is worshipped during a Dashavatara puja. Read slowly it takes about ten minutes, and the name Brahmastuta occurs twice, at positions 65 and 105.
