Meaning

Names drawn from the Aditya Hridayam

Most of these 108 names are lifted straight from the verses of the Aditya Hridayam, the hymn Agastya teaches a weary Rama before the final battle with Ravana in the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. That is why the list opens exactly as that hymn does, with Rashmimate, Samudyate, Devasura Namaskrita and Vivasvate. What the verses say in sentences is broken here into single names, so it can be used in puja.

Every god as the Sun

From name 11 the list runs Brahmane, Vishnave, Shivaya, Skandaya, Prajapataye, Mahendraya, treating every deity as a face of the Sun. Kala, Yama, Soma, Varuna as lord of waters, the pitrs and the Vasus follow. Then comes the visible Sun: Hiranyaretas, Divakara, Haridashva, Saptasapti, Martanda. Name 69, Dvadashatma, points to the twelve Adityas of the twelve months, and the names Purvagiri and Pashchimagiri recall the eastern and western mountains of sunrise and sunset.

The closing names

Near the end he is the destroyer of darkness and of enemies, the punisher of the ungrateful and Vishvakarma, the maker of all. The list closes with Payate, Tapate, Varshate and Supteshu Jagrate: the Sun who protects, heats, sends rain and keeps watch while everyone sleeps. It is read at sunrise, on Sundays and on Ratha Saptami. A few names, among them Haridashva, Aditya, Surya and Martanda, occur twice in this version.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Sri Aditya Ashtottara Shatanamavali related to the Aditya Hridayam?
Most of its names are taken, nearly in order, from the Aditya Hridayam, the hymn the sage Agastya teaches Rama on the battlefield in the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. Rashmimate, Samudyate, Devasura Namaskrita and Vivasvate open both texts.
Why does the Aditya namavali call the Sun Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Skanda?
Names 11 to 25 follow an Aditya Hridayam verse which says the Sun alone is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Indra, Kubera, Kala, Yama, Soma and Varuna. The pitrs, Vasus, Sadhyas and Ashvins are also listed as his forms.
What does Supteshu Jagrate, the last name of the Aditya Ashtottaram, mean?
It means the one who stays awake while all beings sleep, an image the Aditya Hridayam uses for the Sun dwelling inside every creature. Just before it come Payate, Tapate and Varshate: he who protects, he who heats and he who sends rain.
When is the Sri Aditya Ashtottara Shatanamavali usually read?
It is read at sunrise, usually after offering arghya water to the Sun, and especially on Sundays and on Ratha Saptami in the month of Magha. Some people read it together with the Aditya Hridayam.
Which names in the Aditya namavali refer to the horses of the Sun's chariot?
Haridashva, the lord of the green horses, appears twice in the list, and name 44, Saptasapti, means the one whose chariot has seven horses. Close by are Sahasrarchi and Sahasramshu, the one with a thousand rays.
