Meaning

The Pratyangira Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the hundred and eight names of Pratyangira Devi, also called Atharvana Bhadrakali. She is described as lion-faced and dark, and the tradition places her outside ordinary household worship: she is one of the deities a teacher hands over with instruction rather than one a devotee picks up from a printed book. This page describes the text; it does not teach her sadhana.

Significance

The name is usually read as prati plus angirasa - the one who turns back what the Angirasa rites send out. That reading is the whole of her character in the tradition. She is invoked as a shield, the force that returns harm to where it came from, and the Shaiva accounts connect her rising with the Sharabha episode, when Shiva takes a form to cool the fury of Narasimha that will not subside. Several of the 108 names are frankly ferocious. Teachers read them as wrath aimed at the reciter's own fear, sin and clinging - not as instructions to be turned on another person. That distinction is not a modern softening; the responsible lineages have always refused to use her for abhichara, and they say so plainly to anyone who asks. If you have come here looking for a rite to harm someone, this is the wrong page and the wrong goddess.

How and when to chant

The honest answer is that most teachers hold the full practice - the bija mantras, the nyasa, the homa, the night prayogas - to belong to those with diksha, and to be taken up only under a guru who knows the lineage. Without that, what a householder does is small and safe: light a lamp of ghee or gingelly oil on a Tuesday or on amavasya, sit facing east, say the names with kumkuma, ask only for protection, and stop there. No homa. No rite aimed at any person. Many families visit a Pratyangira shrine and leave the archana to the priest, which is the older custom. If you feel drawn to more than this, find a teacher first and ask.

Frequently asked questions

How do the names in the Pratyangira Ashtottara Shatanamavali describe the goddess?
Simhamukhi and Narasimhi give her a lion's face, Krishnangi a dark body and Jvala Jihva a tongue of flame. She is four-armed (Chaturbhuja), wears a garland of skulls and a serpent as her sacred thread, and carries a damaru and a trident.
What do Paramantra Vidarini and Parakritya Vidhvamsini mean in the Pratyangira namavali?
These two names, with Parayantra Vinashini between them, call her the one who breaks the mantras, yantras and kritya rites sent by others. Turning harm back towards its source is also how tradition reads the name Pratyangira itself.
Why is Pratyangira called Atharvana Bhadrakali in her list of 108 names?
One name, Atharvana Veda Bhasita, ties her to the Atharva Veda, and the 108th and last name is Pratyangira Bhadrakali Devata. Temples and manuals therefore use Atharvana Bhadrakali as her second name.
How do householders usually recite the Pratyangira Ashtottaram at home?
The common practice is to light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp on a Tuesday or on Amavasya and offer kumkum with each of the 108 names, asking only for protection. Most teachers keep homa and bija mantra work for those who have received diksha from a guru.
Why do several names in the Pratyangira Ashtottara link her to Narasimha?
Names such as Narasimhi, Hiranya Satachchhata (the one with a golden mane) and Nrisimha Salagrama Nivasini place her beside Narasimha. Shaiva accounts connect her appearance with the Sharabha episode, when Narasimha's fury had to be calmed.
